Abstract: The bioluminescence method is based on measurements of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the principal energy carrier in all living organisms, including microorganisms. ATP reacts with luciferin in the presence of the catalyst - luciferase enzyme, and the effect of this oxidation reaction is emission of light, recorded by a luminometer. In hygiene monitoring, it is assumed that the amount of the microbial biomass is directly proportional to the amount of ATP in the sample.
